The First Lessons

I’ve talked about talking about code before, the process I’ve been going through to start to learn to teach.

Until the first lesson, everything I’ve shared has been implicit. Implicitly sharing knowledge among my team, implicitly collecting ideas. No structure, no overt plan, and always among those who have similar skill profiles; easily shared within existing language and metaphors.

Nexus and iPhone

On OSes

Anyone who knows me knows I’m an unabashed Apple fan. My recommendation for any new computer purchase is always, without fail, buy a Mac.

I use Macs. Not out of love for the company, but out of love for not having to concern myself with endless configuration hassles.

Talking about Talking about Code

I’ve been thinking a lot about code lately; how I write it, how I learn to write it. I want to teach, to help women find positive voices and positive movements into the world of technology. I want safe spaces to exist, outside the toxic and sexist atmosphere of tech at large.

But in order to teach, you have to understand what you know.

Delightful Shiny New

Over the past few months, I’ve gotten the wonderful opportunity to expand my programming language horizons.

For those who don’t know, I’ve been a Python hacker for years. I love the things you can achieve with Python, I love the way the language flows across the screen; the metaprogramming joy that it brings.

The Open Web

I saw Sir Tim Berners-Lee talk the evening of the 30th of January; you may know him as the man who invented the World Wide Web.

Sir Tim is a vocal proponent of openness. We got to hear a bit of the story around the creation of the initial web software, about convincing CERN to promise to never charge for using Web technologies. I got to see the passion in his movements, in his voice as he told us about those early days, about open source, about the contribution he made and how far it has come.

Firefox OS Dev Day

So on Saturday the 26th of January, Wellington was host to a Mozilla-sponsored Firefox OS Dev Day. Spend a day, meet some other local developers, meet the Firefox people. See the OS, write a cool app.

It’s the first time I ever looked at Boot2Gecko, and before I attended the Dev Day, I had not considered anything about the Open Web.

We Need to Talk

Just Stay Quiet

For a long time, I thought I was an introvert. I thought I liked staying away from people, designing my perfect system, meeting the requirements set out before me. Worth through quiet perseverance.

Software development reeks of this culture; the dead-quiet environments, the stereotypes of the unhygienic nerd.

To-do is Crap

Blah

Getting Things Done is the process of putting yourself at the mercy of a neverending series of lists; the things I’m doing today, the things I’m doing tomorrow. This week.

This year.

Time Enough for Everything

Desire

The root of all capability is desire. We all desire to do more; achieve more; see more. We all desire to write the great novel, read more books, contribute to discussions, or just relax.

I wanted to write more. This will be the twenty second article I post, slotted into a long work-week and full-time relationship.

The Endless War of Should

Social Narratives

I spend a lot of time thinking about narratives. Sometimes fictional stories, but mostly about the way I live my life, the way I see others living theirs.

What I see are stories, scripts. Stories that society tells us, on how to live. How to interact with another person. What we should do with our time. What things should be important to us.
